Three new faces at Bradford, as Bantams look to the future

As transfer windows go, it has been a quiet one so far this summer, at least as far as the Premier League and major European sides have been concerned. There has been plenty of talk, but very little action, and this is likely to be the case till World Cup 2018 is behind us and we move into the final frantic weeks.

That’s not been the case at Bradford, however. Following the disappointing end to last season and the departure of Simon Grayson, Edin Rahic has decided that there is no reason to delay looking forward, and has shared his vision for the coming year.

No need to place your bets here

Unlike so many football bosses, however, Rahic has added actions to his words. Trying to understand how a team is shaping up in the early weeks of the transfer window is often a little like playing in an online casino – the names spin around, but where they stop can be anyone’s guess. In the case of the Bantams, however, we already have three new signings confirmed. Let’s meet them.

Joe Riley

This 21 year old defender came up through the ranks as a youth player at Manchester United, and started life as a midfielder before moving into a left-back position when playing for the under-21s. He made his first team debut in a 2016 FA Cup match against Shrewsbury, but since then has only had one other senior appearance.

A loan spell at Sheffield United last year gave him the opportunity to showcase his undoubted potential, but just when he looked set to make a name for himself, he was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Riley joins Bradford on a two-year contract, and Greg Abbot, the Head of recruitment said: “He ticks a lot of boxes in terms of the way the club wants to go and he really fits the model.”

Josh Wright

Here’s a name that will be familiar to Bantams fans. Josh Wright featured in the Southend line up for both of their encounters with Bradford last year, earning himself a yellow card in the December match at Roots Hall.

He will bring a wealth of experience to the Bradford midfield, having played more than 300 games, despite still being only 28. He featured 30 times for Southend last season, but will formally transfer to Bradford when his contract expires on 01 July.

The London lad has certainly seen every corner of the country. His first professional contract was with Charlton Athletic, before spending two seasons at Scunthorpe. He then had four years at Millwall, much of it spent out on loan. After that, he arrived at Southend via a short stint at Leyton Orient and two years playing for Gillingham.

Thomas Isherwood

Perhaps the biggest news, however, is that Thomas Isherwood will be joining from Bayern Munich II. The 20 year old defender is one of those names that has been discussed in the highest footballing echelons. Towards the end of last season, he was on trial for Rangers, and Celtic had also expressed an interest.

As far back as 2015, Isherwood had been on the radar of Manchester City, and he seemed all set for a move to the UK until Bayern swooped.

Isherwood is from Sweden, and has played for the national team at youth levels from U15 to U19. However, he has an English father and family based in Manchester. He would be eligible to play for England, and the six foot four central defender certainly has the presence to fit in at the highest level.
